A Stop Along the Peconic River

The sweet water of the Peconic River eventually flows through Riverhead then in two more miles it empties into the Great Peconic Bay, a salt water estuary.   It is at the mouth of the Peconic River where the North and South Forks begin.   After visiting the East End Art Council's Riverhead gallery, we stopped at river's edge to photograph glistening, ice covered bushes, brambles, trees and phragmites.  Even a low sky masking much of the sunlight couldn't hide the beauty of the scene before us... a wealth of grays with a touch of gold.

All beautiful shots. I like the way you have set up your posts so people can easily buy your photographs. I am selling cards now too, but through a gallery.

These are fascinating 'Studies in Grey'. It is a rare day when you can shoot directly into the sun, see the sun (sort of) and not get flare or shadows. In some ways, this lighting lets the photos have a greater range of densities, especially exploring the midtones. Rather than making the photos gloomy, it provides added calm, almost a sort of "waiting" shot, waiting for nature to rouse from its sleep. I'm wondering if any can work as successfully in B&W or whether the touches of gentle colours are essential to the photos' success.

In the right hands, a grey day can be made beautiful.

Gorgeous, breathtaking captures of a fantastic place and I don't care how cold it looks -- and it does, but so beautiful! Wonderful reflections on the water! Hope you have a great week, Mark!

I like your words, “a wealth of grays with a touch of god”, ...so true, and even the cloudy sky contributes to the almost monochromatic beauty bright. These beautiful shots of cold but serene tranquility reminds me of the time when en we had rare snow 3weeks ago. I especially like the first image with the reflection of the sun.

Exceptional captures with the trees blossoming with ice flowers. If you half close your eye, it looks like a spectacular spring has sprung.

What fantastic photos they are!! They look as if they were blooming in the fantasy world. Your photos erasse the boundary between the real and the fantasy. Amazing photos!! My favorite is the second.
