Agriculture on the North Fork
Agriculture on the North Fork consisted mainly of cauliflower and potatoes for many years. Though these crops are still being farmed the emphasis has turned to organic produce for retail sale to the locals and to tourists through farm stands. My favorite is sweet bi-color corn that gets picked fresh each morning. The farm stands augment their lines with locally baked breads, pies, jams and more. During harvest season some of the stands offer corn mazes, hay rides and you-pick, what I call Agri-tainment. One way to attract traffic to a farm stand is by displaying old brightly painted farm equipment. These farm stands along with wineries are the saving grace that help to keep the North Fork a profitable semi-agrarian region.
