Kimogener Point / Inlet Pond Park

Kimogener Point is a beautiful spot located at the head of West Creek where the estuary meets the Great Peconic Bay in New Suffolk.  It has it's own protected harbor where the residents dock their boats for the season.  The creek is an excellent place to clam in the shallows and at night, with the aid of a powerful flashlight, attract and catch blue crabs with nets under the bridge.  The estuary is home to many species of birds, most noticeably osprey, and water fowl.  It remains in pristine condition due to it's protected wetland status.  What a great place to call home.

I'm including two photos that were taken at Inlet Pond Park to show the construction of an osprey nest and a sitting adolescent.

Dawn Comes to Wickham's Creek

It was early and the birds hadn't yet risen to their song.   The long low rays of the sun began to appear over the ridge of Nassau Point to the east and painted golden edges on all before it.  A bit of breeze worked against an ebbing tide as a few leaves drifted by.  Let the day begin.  The stage is set... Act I.

Of and Near the Water

These photos were taken at different times and places.  The common thread is water.

This fall the grasses by the East Creek Inlet showed lots of color.

The Long Island Rail Road's tracks and stony bed provide the hard surface needed by gulls to break shellfish shells to get at the goodies inside, a "clam opener". We sometimes watch juvenile gulls pick up their latest clam find, fly up in the air, then drop it onto soft sandy beach.  This is repeated for quite some time until their bird brain finally gets it (hence the term?).  This section of track passes through Dam Pond Preserve.

Things left or uncovered in a tide pool after the tide has gone out.

This is a fresh water pond that fills with rain water and melted snow runoff.

Sky Watch Friday

The early morning sun casts long shadows while illuminating everything in it's path with a golden glow. Near perfect reflections appear on undisturbed water and I have a feeling of contented solitude.
