A low sun at seven thirty last Friday cast a golden glow on a sand dune with it's weathered trees to the west and on the flat sandy beach to the east, the start of a beautiful, quiet evening.

Mattituck Inlet 4 to 5 PM November 30, 2011

The four day Thanksgiving was over, our guests returned home. The day had been a cold windy one, brilliant sun then cloudy in a blue sky, very changeable throughout the day. As the early evening approached I felt I needed to see the sun as it set.  I drove to the east side of the Mattituck Inlet breakwater to the Sound and took a few shots then went around the inlet to the west side for some more.  There was "golden hour" light lasting for an instant then whisked away, turn and turn about as I recalled memories from this day two years ago.

Rock at the End of Depot Lane

  We inherited an oil painting depicting the rock at the end of Depot Lane from my wife's grandmother years ago and today it hangs on our dining room wall.   During my years of blogging I've photographed this rock many times.  I find it a fascinating subject as it remains solid, seemingly unmovable, and immutable since it was dropped off here by the Wisconsin glacier some 21,000 years ago.  What does change is everything else... day, night, the seasons, the tide.  In the summer sun it is very warm to the touch and remains so into the night.  In the winter it is sometimes completely covered with a glaze of ice from salt water spray.  During a low, or neap tide, it can be high and dry as in the painting but when a high tide is in it can be pretty far into the water, with a depth difference of more than six feet.

Getting up early in the morning is a gift I give to myself.   Everything looks so clean and fresh and made just for me as usually no one else is there with which to enjoy it.  The solitude mid such beauty never fails to put me in a worshipful mind that seems clearer than normal, more open.  Seeing what is before me on the horizon and in the water's edge at my feet brings the large and the small together as a unified thing.  This is my cathedral. 

 Mist rises from the far side of East Creek as a pair of osprey greet the sun with their new young.

Trumpet flowers frame a sailboat moored on the Great Peconic Bay between Cutchogue and New Suffolk.

Long morning shadows.

It won't be too long before many of the kayaks will be out on the water for a holiday paddle.

The setting sun provided it's own pyrotechnics before fireworks began.  Later, the rim of the bay was outlined by many displays as neighborhood groups came out to enjoy the color and balmy weather.

Taken on different days these shots of sunrises are from the East Creek and the sandy edge of the Peconic Bay.  Both sunsets are looking WNW over the Long Island Sound from the end of Depot Lane.

Omen

A Fine Saturday - March 20, 2010 - Spring

 -- and then one dawn the sky is clear and blue forever...  the sun is not just light but warmth.  The snow drops hang their white blossoms as if a little ashamed of their precious beauty.


As our hemisphere comes out of it's hibernation in the timelessness of it all, what is the number of this some billionth Spring that is today?   I wouldn't have wanted to miss this one.   Happy Spring, Judy, and all my friends out there.

Sky Watch Friday - A Goodbye to Summer

It is so very, very difficult for me to say goodbye to summer. I'm at my happiest and feeling my best during the days of blazing sun and warm waters, early dawns and late sunsets, the natural progression of crops ripening each to be enjoyed in it's own turn. I preserve as much of it as I can for the months of cold when I need a reminder that this will pass. I cling to summer for days after the autumnal equinox has come and gone and rime frost has twinkled on the grass. At last my cold fingers just can't hang on anymore and I have to let go.

At the End of the Day

Sunday a group of us went to a Long Island beach on the North Fork just east of the Mattituck Inlet. The deepening evening light was beautiful, the sand still warm from a sunny day felt good on bare feet, the Sound was calm. Birds were winging their way to nests, once the sun was down a party boat full of fishermen headed back to dock, along the beach fires were being lit one by one. What a wonderful close to the day.
