A Stop Along the Peconic River

The sweet water of the Peconic River eventually flows through Riverhead then in two more miles it empties into the Great Peconic Bay, a salt water estuary.   It is at the mouth of the Peconic River where the North and South Forks begin.   After visiting the East End Art Council's Riverhead gallery, we stopped at river's edge to photograph glistening, ice covered bushes, brambles, trees and phragmites.  Even a low sky masking much of the sunlight couldn't hide the beauty of the scene before us... a wealth of grays with a touch of gold.

Dawn Comes to Wickham's Creek

It was early and the birds hadn't yet risen to their song.   The long low rays of the sun began to appear over the ridge of Nassau Point to the east and painted golden edges on all before it.  A bit of breeze worked against an ebbing tide as a few leaves drifted by.  Let the day begin.  The stage is set... Act I.

Gale Force Winds

These shots were taken in high winds where I could not hold the camera steady. Most were shot at extreme zoom focal length from within our rocking Jeep as we got blasted by sand from the beaches. Please forgive the graininess. See photos below, click to enlarge.
The night before last the wind began to pick up and the temperature plummeted. It was an arctic high blowing down our way, pushing steady 40 mph winds gusting 55 to 60 mph, short of a hurricane, but windy. With the wind chill factor the temperature was + or - zero. A normally placid Long Island Sound was whipped into a froth, seas reaching 8 - 10+ feet, endangering shipping. I got an early shot of a tug keeping a barge from running aground just north of Greenport, this before the storm hit it's stride. The tumult in the water tossed the small stuff (bait fish) around out of control making it a field day for the gulls having a feeding frenzy.

At Southold Town Beach the wind was so strong that I couldn't force the door of our Jeep open, but this fellow trying to impress his girlfriend made it out and grabbed a sign post just before being whisked off his feet and on to the hood of his car. That's show biz!

Here a tanker is in shallow water, 30 - 40 feet just off the Mattituck Inlet Jetty. It promises to be a long night for the captain of this vessel, fighting the broadside winds just off a lee shore.

At the End of the Day

Sunday a group of us went to a Long Island beach on the North Fork just east of the Mattituck Inlet. The deepening evening light was beautiful, the sand still warm from a sunny day felt good on bare feet, the Sound was calm. Birds were winging their way to nests, once the sun was down a party boat full of fishermen headed back to dock, along the beach fires were being lit one by one. What a wonderful close to the day.

Sky Watch Friday

The early morning sun casts long shadows while illuminating everything in it's path with a golden glow. Near perfect reflections appear on undisturbed water and I have a feeling of contented solitude.

Fishermen

Young and old fishermen alike will do almost anything to have a little time by or on the water, rod in hand with hopes for a "keeper". There's nothing to compare with eating a just-caught fish. Many times no fish are caught let alone seen, but when done one can go back home relaxed, maybe now having the answer to something that had been troubling, figured out in the solitude of the quest, looking into the water and seeing one's soul.
